More Than What You See: Poem by Rodrick Bates

She’s more than what you can see
Or what you think she could ever be
Her face may light up the room
But her heart does have a beat
And she’s far more than your needs

She’s like a jar that’s full of bees
Left alone she could do no harm
But if you pry and twist consistently
Trying to take her honey and leave
You can create the roughest storm

What good is the sense of the eye
If the other senses are pushed aside
If you’re curious of what’s inside
Don’t ask what’s planned for the night
Ask her, “What is her plan for life”

Because this woman could actually be
A whole lot more than what you see
And if you open your doors to misconceive
Giving nothing but expecting something
You’ve just made misery your company

She may be beautiful on the outside
But wants the inside recognized too
But if your only sense is the eye
That’s about as much as you can do
Because her insides require more tools

So the next time you see this woman
Don’t approach her with personal needs
Approach her going at a slower speed
Because on the inside she might just be
More than what you see
